Instructions to Competitors
1. The Cardiff Head of the Taff is organised by the Cardiff Bay Watermen
in association with the Cardiff Harbour Authority
and held under WARA / ARA Rules of Racing and Water Safety Code.
2. Car and Trailer parking is at Cardiff Yacht Club,
Windsor Esplanade, Butetown, Cardiff CF10 5BG,
where launching and recovery of boats takes place.
An attendant will be on duty
but neither the organisers nor Cardiff Yacht Club
will accept any responsibility for any vehicles or property
left in the car park so lock your vehicles
and safeguard your property. Trailers may be parked
in Cardiff Yacht club car park under the direction
of the stewards, subject to there being sufficient space
.(Llandaff , Cardiff Uni & Mumbles may use Channel View slipway
to speed up boating)
3. Changing and toilet facilities are provided
with the kind permission of Cardiff Yacht Club
4. Crew Numbers which will be issued in the clubhouse
(Race Control) from 07:30 am must be fixed on the back
of bow's racing top and to the back of the coxswain.
Any crew not wearing the correct number, which must be visible,
may be disqualified.
No numbers will be issued until the entry fee has been paid
5. Pre-race briefing for all coxes and persons responsible for
steering coxless boats will be held
in the clubhouse at 9:00 for Division 1
13:00 for Division 2
6. FOR SAFETY, NO CREWS WILL BE ALLOWED TO BOAT
LATER THAN 20 minutes BEFORE RACE START TIME
THIS MUST BE OBSERVED TO ENSURE A CLEAR COURSE/
Please take oars /blades to the slipway before your boat
to avoid delay on the launching area
7. Boats will proceed upstream to the start, keeping to port (left) .
On the way to the start crews should familiarise themselves
with the course and take note of hazardous areas
Boats will assemble above Cardiff Bridge, in race order,
facing upstream
Do not turn until instructed by the Start Marshall,
who will give instructions to proceed to the Start
8. When called to the start, the starter will say " Number ...... Go !"
Boats will be started at approximately 20 second intervals.
The Timing Point is about 30 metres from the start.
Out of sequence arrivals must report to the Start Marshall
who will say when they may start.
9. Coaching from the bank or other craft by means of loud-hailers,
megaphones or any other kind of electrical radio equipment
is not allowed.
10. Boats being overtaken MUST keep to port (left)
Race monitors stationed along the bank and in boats
will report any baulking to the Chief Umpire
who may decide to impose a time penalty.
11. After finishing, boats will proceed to the landing stage.
12. All competitors and friends are welcome at Cardiff Yacht Club
where provisional times will be posted..
The bar will be open and hot snacks
and refreshments will be available all day.
13. Prizes will be presented in the clubhouse at 4:45 pm
14. Celtic Longboats - Division 2 Extended 8 km race
for men and mixed crews
On reaching the end of the 4 km Head course
crews will follow the buoyed course
15. Thank you for entering the Cardiff Head of the Taff,
now in its fifth year, we will endeavour to ensure your safety
and a warm welcome for you in the clubhouse
